Africa-Press – Tanzania. AS she marks one year of her leadership in Tanzania’s top office today, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has continued to receive accolades for opening up the country in the international arena and enhancing democracy and good governance.

Ms Samia took oath of office on March 19th, 2021 following the death of the former Head of State, the late Dr John Magufuli, who passed away while receiving treatment at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Dar es Salaam.

During her first national address shortly after she was sworn-in last year, President Samia pledged to carry on development programmes and open up the country by promoting economic diplomacy through multilateralism.

Indeed, President Samia has hit the ground running and opened up the country, which is currently seeing a flurry of investments. Pundits describe the Zanzibar-born leader as a person who exemplifies true leadership traits, having learnt the ropes from her predecessors.

They remain optimistic that the former Vice-President will continue to register remarkable achievements and will always set an indelible leadership mark.

“Her term in the State House has already proved that she is an exemplary leader with combined experience in various governance cycles,” opined Dr Eliamani Laltaika, an adjunct faculty member at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST).

Dr Laltaika, who is also an advocate and expert in Intellectual Property, described the country’s top most leader as someone endowed with an inner eye and a wider horizon that will undoubtedly take Tanzania to greater heights.

He said in the past one year, the country has certainly been unified in her motherly hands, where polarization has become a thing of the past.

Speaking recently ahead of commemorations of the Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) 45th anniversary since its establishment, former President Jakaya Kikwete showered praise on President Samia for her good leadership from the time she took the country’s mandate. He said President Samia has managed to lead the country well despite taking over the role without being prepared psychologically.

According to him, President Samia has even surpassed expectations of many people with regard to her efficacy in executing presidential roles.

“It was Dr Magufuli who was supposed to lead the country until 2025, but he couldn’t after passing away, that’s when the then Vice-President Ms Samia had to take over,” he said.

Adding: “Normally, she was supposed to be prepared first by having the agenda that she would have to implement during her tenure in office, but she came in between and did her job well,” noted the former president.

Mr Kikwete, who served between 2005 and 2015, was equally impressed that the sixth phase government is walking the talk on implementation of the 3rd Five -Year National Development Plan 2021/2026.

He also issued the same remarks during the Mineral Night Gala held recently, saying under the administration of President Samia, the government has put in place an enabling environment for investors and focus on value addition for minerals.

“Those who have eyes and ears are seeing and hearing what the government is doing right now,” noted Mr Kikwete.

Apart from her efforts on opening up the country, the head of state has also been praised for her initiatives of safeguarding national peace, unity and building consensus, with commentators noting that President Samia has set a living legacy within a short time of her service.

Speaking at the State House in Dar es Salaam, some spiritual leaders described President Samia as an attentive, visionary and development-driven leader.

“The most exemplary thing she has done is to reach out, listen and implement things the right way. She has indeed lifted the country. “We pray that she continues to do it the same way. We call her ‘mother’, and the mother is always right, regardless of anything,” the Head of the Hindu Community in Tanzania, Mr Sanjay Hoza, remarked. Bishop of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) in Karagwe Diocese, Dr Benson Bagonza, commented that the list of achievements recorded by the government under President Samia is far longer than the year of her presidency.

Tanzania’s Chief Sheikh, Mufti Abubakar Zubeiry bin Ally, pointed out how the Head of State has managed to demonstrate her patriotism and brilliance within a short period of time of her presidency.

“We pray that she carries on with serving Tanzanians for the interests of the country. She has set out a new vision and direction of where the country is supposed to go,” the Mufti declared.

To prove that she is walking the talk on building national peace, unity and consensus , President Samia recently met with the Chairman of the opposition party, Chadema, Freeman Mbowe, just hours after the latter was released by the Corruption and Economic Crime Division of the High Court on several charges he was facing.

Mr Mbowe and three others were facing charges at the Corruption and Economic Crime Division of the High Court. However, he was released after the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) submitted a nolle prosequi notice under Section 91 of the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA).

Speaking shortly after the meeting, Mr Mbowe hailed President Samia for being concerned and inviting him for the talks, saying they agreed to continue building the country in harmony.

For his part, an economistcum-banker, Dr Hilderbrand Shayo said President Samia’s integrity and tenacity in serving Tanzanians and continuing to uphold national firmness, traditions, and customs is crystal clear that Tanzania and its people are in the safe hands of someone who truly knows the task ahead.

“Her resilience, strength and toughness, although in a motherly look on critical matters and determination to serve Tanzanians as chairperson of the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) is evident, no doubt the success of one year as a sitting president is a sign that not only many good things are coming, but also continued support, with each person playing his or her part,” he said.

He also acknowledged the achievements that have been realized both locally and internationally. This goes hand in hand with the pledge that the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta issued to President Samia that he would cement further the bilateral ties on all aspects.

“My government shall lead the way in working with your government, to ensure we enhance our unity as neighbours and members of the East Africa Community,” he said after their talks held at the Dar es Salaam State House in December last year,” he said.
