Africa-PressTanzania. THE Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) has registered and issued 401 derivative land rights to foreign investors in the last 20 years.

Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development William Lukuvi revealed this in a written response to a supplementary question by Mafinga Urban MP Cosato Chumi yesterday, adding that the figure was from 1999 to May 2021.

The MP said in his question that the World Bank’s ease of doing business report cites land ownership processes as one of the reasons for Tanzania to lag behind.

In response, the minister said the government has taken various initiatives to improve the situation, including directing land councils responsible for leasing land to investors to meet every month instead of four which was stipulated earlier in a move to facilitate investment in the country.

The MP wanted to know if the government was ready to allow land councils to seat every month instead of four months to ease the processing of land applications lodged by investors.

The minister said for the past three months since the councils started meeting on monthly basis, a total of 173 derivative rights from 174 which were requested by investors have been issued. In his basic question, Chumi wanted to know how many investors were given derivative rights via TIC.

In his response, Deputy Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Investment) William Ole Nasha said investors received the ownership titles via TIC according to the law.

“The law stipulates that the land commissioner will issue Certificate of Right of Occupancy in the name of TIC to a foreign investor
