Africa-Press – Tanzania. Dar es Salaam residents packed major supermarkets on Sunday as many rushed to buy essential supplies ahead of December 9, resulting in long queues and crowded aisles across the city.
The rush comes even after the Tanzania Police Force announced a ban on the planned December 9 demonstrations, with a section of residents still choosing to prepare for possible disruptions.
At Shoppers supermarket in Mlimani City, families were seen stocking up on food, water and other necessities. A store attendant told the Citizen that the number of shoppers was almost ten times higher than what they usually record at the beginning of December.
The increased demand is being linked to concerns about the planned protests, fears of potential restrictions and anticipated festive season price hikes.
Authorities, including the police force and the Dar es Salaam regional commissioner, have called for calm and assured the public that security measures across the city have been strengthened.
