Africa-PressTanzania. TWELVE wards in Dar es Salaam region have been equipped with skills for flood risk management which are essential for addressing challenges related to floods in the city.

Ms Nyambiri Kimacha, a risk and disaster management expert from the World Bank Tanzania office said that equipping skills were part of Jipange project, a Dar es Salaam Community Disaster Preparedness and Response, and Risk Reduction Plans.

“A resilient city can adapt to a variety of changing weather conditions and withstand shocks and stresses while still providing essential services to its residents and productive work going un-distorted. Also, destruction of properties and housings will be averted or having shocks minimised,” Ms Kimacha said during a project handover ceremony Wednesday.

She said that World Bank Tanzania had apart from training, dished out emergency communication tools and electricity backup systems to be used in times of troubles to rescue people and properties.

Also, the database and maps depicting flood prone areas have been generated to simplify community’s intervention.

For her part, Jipange project Manager, Ms Shamim Zakaria said that among other things, they have equipped over 300 hundred people with skills on how they can strive to reduce flood risks using as little resources as possible.

Ms Zakaria said that trainees testified to have acquired skills on how they can help communities in disaster risk areas.
