Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President, Hussein Mwinyi has called on political parties in the country to continue using dialogue and reconciliation in addressing various challenges facing them for the betterment of the nation.
President Mwinyi made the call in Dodoma on Friday when closing a three-day political stakeholders’ meeting aimed at discussing the state of democracy in the country. He said political parties should refrain from the propagation of politics of hatred which will divide them, and that they should focus on politics which aimed at safeguarding the interests of Tanzanians and the country in general.
“It is important to shun hate politics and continue to resolve our political differences through dialogue and reconciliation and respect to the country’s laws,” Dr Mwinyi stressed. He further noted that through dialogue and reconciliation, Zanzibar managed to come up with three peace accords since the isle held its first multiparty election in 1995.
Dr Mwinyi said that even the Political Parties’ Council which organised the meeting in collaboration with the office of the Registrar of Political Parties is a result of 2001 peace accord between Chama Cha Mapinduzi and the Civic United Front. He said the meeting was a manifestation of maturity in democracy and good governance both in Mainland and Zanzibar.
Dr Mwinyi further explained that Tanzania is among a few countries worth to be emulated in Africa and the world at large due to its political maturity and promotion of good governances. He said the country’s ability to bury their political, religious and tribe differences is among the factors that make it one of the seven most peaceful and secure states.
“The 2021 Report of Institute for Economics and Peace indicates that Tanzania is one of the seven countries with the highest level of security and peace,” he said. He said it is now 29 years since the country allowed multiparty politics and 26 years since the country held its first multiparty election.
“It is important to deliberate on achievements and challenges raised during this period,” he said. He further said that history indicates that the meeting is important because during such period of time there are achievements and challenges which will be addressed based on the meeting recommendations.
Dr Mwinyi said that he has been pleased with the resolutions on the importance of respecting laws and upholding peace tranquility, political unity and promote economic development in multiparty system. “These factors are very crucial because the country’s development depends on peace and tranquility,” he noted. He said multiparty system has broadened democracy forums, freedom of expression and choice and an opportunity for advising and challenge the government.
The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled), Ms Jenista Mhagama said that the ongoing work in the country is crucial in strengthening basis of democracy
