Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has called for a broader approach to infrastructure development, urging a shift beyond road construction to embrace technological transformation and clean energy solutions.
In a special interview with the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), Dr Mwinyi said infrastructure development should go hand in hand with modern technology, including the gradual adoption of electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
He said the transition should begin with private vehicles, followed by public transport and eventually government fleets, as part of efforts to build a more sustainable transport system.
Dr Mwinyi noted that such a shift would also enhance the tourism sector, as visitors increasingly prefer environmentally friendly destinations that meet international standards of cleanliness and modernity.
“Zanzibar must move with global changes in transport technology,” he said, stressing the need for the islands to keep pace with global innovation trends.
Meanwhile, the Isle’s President also highlighted Zanzibar’s global identity as the “Spice Island,” saying the name is rooted in its historic production of cloves and other spices such as black pepper and cinnamon.
He said although production of these crops has declined compared to earlier years, the government is implementing measures to revive the sector and restore its competitiveness in global markets.
“Our goal is to ensure Zanzibar continues to hold its status as a global hub for spices so that the name Spice Island remains recognised internationally,” he said.
In another development, commencing on matters of national unity, Dr Mwinyi urged Tanzanians to continue safeguarding peace and protecting the Union between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar ahead of the Union Day celebrations on April 26, 2026.
He said the Union has delivered significant economic and social benefits, including expanded trade opportunities and improved livelihoods.
Dr Mwinyi stressed that it is the responsibility of every citizen to nurture and protect the Union for the benefit of present and future generations, describing it as a cornerstone of Tanzania’s stability and development.
