Gasperini Takes over from Ranieri as Roma New Manager

Africa-Press – Tanzania. Gian Piero Gasperini, a former coach at Atalanta, was named AS Roma’s new manager on Friday. The 67-year-old will sign a three-year deal.

The retired Claudio Ranieri will take Gasperini’s position at Roma, who placed fifth in the rankings last season to earn a spot in the Europa League—a tournament Gasperini won with his former club—after he departed Atalanta on Saturday after nine years as manager.

Last season, the 73-year-old Ranieri returned from retirement to take over as manager for the third time at Roma, where he started his playing career and currently serves as an advisor. This was his third managerial position.

Although there was a one-year extension option, Gasperini declared in February that he would not be signing a new contract with Atalanta because he felt the time was right to move on.

His contract was set to expire in June.

“Gasperini’s career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development,” a Roma club statement said.

“Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission.”

When Atalanta won the Europa League in 2024, it was not only the team’s first European victory but also Gasperini’s first trophy in a lengthy managerial career that started in 2003.

He helped lead Atalanta from struggling in Serie A to regular European competition.

After 26 years away from the team, Gasperini created a name for himself at Atalanta, where he qualified for the European Championship in his debut season.

He started his coaching career with Crotone and has since managed Genoa, Inter Milan, and Palermo.

After leading the Serie A standings in December of last year and competing for the championship for a considerable amount of time, Atalanta finished third for the fourth time under Gasperini.

Roma, who were losing finalists in the Europa League the year after winning the Conference League in 2022, will hope to Gasperini to return them to the Champions League for the first time since 2019.
