Africa-PressTanzania. TANZANIA has applauded the Germany government for sponsoring a cleanliness campaign in Dar es Salaam City through GIZ organization under its DeveloPPP project.

The GIZ support also involves provision of hygiene equipment which will be used during the campaign. Ilala City Mayor, Omar Kumbilamoto expressed the gratitude yesterday during the launching of the cleanliness campaign at Magogoni Fish Market in Dar es Salaam.

The campaign will be conducted by Emmanuel Brotherhood Foundation (EBF) in various wards of five districts in Dar es Salaam. He said the target groups in the campaign will involve ward leaders, food vendors, fish mongers, commuter bus drivers and conductors.

“We express our gratitude to GIZ and EBF for your kind support to our City because the facilities you have given us will be useful to many people,” the City Mayor said.

He noted that for many years Dar es Salaam City has been free from infectious diseases such as diarrhea due to regular cleanliness campaigns. EBF advisor, Alex Benson said the cleanliness equipment included buckets, soaps, pesticide, sanitizers and sanitary pads for women and girls.

He said the project was intended to ensure that the environment of doing business was improved and was free from communicable diseases.

Mr Benson added that communicable diseases can be prevented through regular cleanliness and hygiene campaigns. He said recent statistics showed that the government has been spending 70 per cent of the health budget in communicable diseases which are mostly due to dirty environment.

He said that project stakeholders will raise awareness to the communities on the importance of cleanness and how it can free them from infectious diseases.

‘We commend the government of Germany through GIZ for its decision to sponsor this campaign and use local companies like BINGWA Laboratories Ltd and AFRICRAFT to produce products that will be used during this campaign,” he said.
