Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has stated that it has started subsidising the prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders purchased by end users in the country.

Deputy Minister for Energy Judith Kapinga spoke of the government resolve to ensure the larger Tanzanian population transition to clean cooking energy in Parliament yesterday.

The government continues to implement the National Clean Cooking Strategy 2024 – 2034 through which it subsidises the gas cylinders by between 20 and 50 per cent of the price of each Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinder.

She was responding to a legislator who wanted to be informed on when the government will start offering subsidy for LPG cylinders as part of the strategies meant to save rural women who have always been accused of witchcraft simply due to their red eyes caused by charcoal and firewood smoke during cooking.

The deputy minister said the government is committed to ensuring Tanzanians, especially rural population transition to clean cooking energy.

She said subsidising prices of gas cylinders goes hand in hand with distribution of 200, 000 improved cooking stoves and availing power to rural areas.

In another development, Ms Kapinga said the government, through Rural Energy Agency (REA), gives priority to institutions that offer services to the public when it avails power to rural areas.

The deputy minister was responding to the question by Special Seats MP Neema Lugangira.

The MP wanted to know if the government was not seeing it important to avail power to public institutions in rural areas so that they could be connected to ICT services.
