Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has promised to provide 2bn/ – to improve Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) infrastructure in order to provide better education.
This was stated on Tuesday by the Deputy Minister for Works and Transport, Mwita Waitara when he visited the DMI offices in Dar es Salaam.
He said the world is highly technologically advanced, so the equipment used by trainers is not modern and the existing buildings do not reflect the education provided at the college.
“In order to ensure our colleges have international status, significant improvements must be made,” said Waitara, while urging DMI employees to take the existing challenges as opportunities and to work hard in a patriotic spirit.
Regardless, Waitara said the government will continue to allocate adequate budget to improve government colleges.
On his part, DMI Principal, Dr Erick Massami said that about 90 per cent of young people working in public and private institutions in the maritime sector were the product of DMI.
Dr Massami said DMI is supporting the government in addressing the problem of unemployment among youth.
He said DMI offers professional programmes in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and Association of Business Managers and Administrators.
He added that graduates from the institute can work in many areas, such as Shipping Companies, Maritime Training Institutions, Sea Ports, Maritime Administrations, Shipping Agencies, Salvage Companies, Marine Survey Companies, Shipyards, Power Generating Companies, Mining Companies, Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Companies, Logistics Companies and Transport Companies.
Dr Massami said DMI strives to offer training, research and consultancy under the best possible environment.
