Africa-PressTanzania. THE Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has insisted on timely skin treatment in abattoirs saying only ten percent of the skin fits for industrial consumption.

Assistant Director of Livestock Products, Food Security and Nutrition, in the Ministry, Mr Gabriel Bura said timely treatment of skin helps to maintain the quality of the skin in the market.

He was speaking during the capacity building workshop to skinning supervisors in the Lake Zone yesterday.

“The findings show that a large percentage of skin loss occurs during the transportation, slaughtering as well as during grazing. We should fight these challenges as we look forward to improve the situation,” said Mr Bura.

To make it possible, he added, the government has been offering regular public education to herders on how to treat their animals, including avoiding thorny bushes during grazing, which cause bruises on animal skin.

According to Mr Bura, livestock keepers have been taught on how to prevent their animals from diseases, including timely vaccination for quality animal skin.
