Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has underlined the importance of working closely with religious institutions in addressing the country’s social, economic and political challenges.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labour, Employment and Relations, Mr Deus Sangu, underscored the government’s position during a visit to the headquarters of the National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA) in Dar es Salaam over the weekend.
During the visit, Mr Sangu met BAKWATA leaders to formally introduce himself and to outline the new coordination role on relations that has been entrusted to his office.
He was received by the Mufti and Chairman of BAKWATA, Sheikh Dr Abubakar Zubeir bin Ally, alongside members of the council.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Sangu commended BAKWATA for its longstanding contribution to strengthening peace, unity and national cohesion.
He noted that the council has played a critical role in promoting moral values and social harmony by encouraging peaceful dialogue, tolerance and positive relations among followers of different faiths.
“These efforts have significantly contributed to maintaining national stability and unity,” the minister said, adding that religious institutions remain indispensable partners in fostering peaceful coexistence and inclusive development.
Mr Sangu further assured BAKWATA that the Sixth Phase Government, under President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, will continue to collaborate with the council and other faith-based institutions to advance the national agenda of peace, unity and inclusive development.
He said the government recognises the influence and reach of religious institutions in society and values their role in nurturing ethical values, resolving conflicts peacefully and mobilising communities towards development initiatives.
For his part, Mufti Zubeir bin Ally, praised President Samia for recognising the importance of relations and for establishing a dedicated ministry to coordinate matters related to engagement and cooperation.
He thanked the government for acknowledging and appreciating the contribution of BAKWATA and pledged the council’s continued cooperation with the government in promoting national unity, peace and social cohesion.
Sheikh Dr Abubakar said BAKWATA remains committed to supporting government efforts aimed at strengthening harmony among Tanzanians, regardless of religious or social backgrounds, noting that unity and peace are essential foundations for sustainable national development.
