Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Ministry of Home Affairs has expressed its commitment to clearing accumulated outstanding debts owed by contractors providing services with the Police Force and Tanzania Prison Service.
The commitment was made here by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Daniel Sillo when responding to a main question posed by Tabora Urban lawmaker, Emmanuel Mwakasaka (CCM) who had wanted to know the government’s plan to settle debts owed to contractors, particularly those related to the Police and Prisons.
In response, the deputy minister admitted that it is true the two institutions owe the government unpaid debts.
According to him, the government acknowledges the debts owed by various contractors providing services, with the Police Force owing a total of 651.7bn/-.
However, he revealed that in the 2024/2025 fiscal year, the government disbursed a total of 3.2bn/- to the police force.
“The debt owed to contractors in the Prisons Department amounts to 33,53bn/-, of which 15.1bn/- has been verified by the treasury and is awaiting payment from the Ministry of Finance” he said.
Mr Sillo assured the House that the government will continue to settle these debts as funds become available from the budget allocated each financial year.
During her supplementary question, Ms Ester Matiko (Special Seats-CHADEMA) raised concern over accumulated debts owned by prison officers, demanding to know if there were plans so far to clear them.
Also, Ms Ester Bulaya (Special Seats-CHADEMA) raised yet another concern over unpaid dues owed by police officers in leave arrears and other stipends.
