Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Japan-based Toyo Engineering Corporation has expressed interest in investing in a fertilizer manufacturing plant in Tanzania, aiming to boost local production using natural gas and coal.

The development emerged during talks between Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture (Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanisation), Athumani Kilundumya, and TOYO’s Director of International Business Department, Taisuke Nonaka, who was accompanied by a senior sales manager from the same division.

The proposed facility would produce key fertilisers, including ammonia and urea, in a move expected to enhance availability and support agricultural productivity in the country.

Speaking during the meeting, Kilundumya assured the investors that the government will continue to collaborate with private sector players in the fertiliser industry to ensure adequate supply and accelerate fertiliser use among farmers.

He also urged the company to undertake comprehensive feasibility studies to ensure the investment aligns with farmers’ needs and delivers tangible benefits to crop production.

TOYO is a global player in engineering, procurement and construction, particularly in energy and industrial projects.

Tanzania has been focusing on enhancing its agricultural sector to ensure food security and boost economic growth. The government has been encouraging foreign investments in agriculture, particularly in fertilizer production, to reduce dependency on imports. The collaboration with Toyo Engineering highlights the ongoing efforts to modernize agricultural practices and improve productivity through local manufacturing of essential inputs like fertilizers. This investment aligns with Tanzania’s broader strategy to leverage its natural resources for sustainable development.
