JK graces Legal Forum, a vital platform heading to General Elections

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Former Tanzanian President, Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, has blessed the National Legal Forum, calling it a vital platform that empowers citizens with a broader understanding of their fundamental rights and the laws governing the country’s electoral process.

Dr. Kikwete, who was the guest of honor, made these remarks today June 21, 2025 while officially opening the forum organized by the Association of Government Lawyers. He noted that the event comes at a critical time as the country prepares for the upcoming General Election, set to take place in a few months.

“Your decision to organize this forum and bring citizens together to gain knowledge and awareness about the upcoming election, which is just a few months away, is a commendable and exemplary initiative,” said Dr. Kikwete during his opening speech.

He stressed that the forum’s themes are crucial and highly relevant to national development, especially in strengthening the foundations of democracy. He urged participants to attentively follow the presentations from legal stakeholders and actively engage in the discussions, as the knowledge gained will contribute to building a legally informed society.

The former President also reflected on the historical development of democracy in Tanzania, noting that the nation has undergone various transitions since independence, from a single-party system to a multiparty political system. He stated that it is essential for citizens to understand that journey and recognize their current role in advancing and safeguarding democratic principles.

The forum is expected to significantly enhance public awareness of the law, voting rights, electoral institutions’ responsibilities, and the role of legal frameworks in ensuring free and fair elections.
