Africa-Press – Tanzania. KAGERA Regional Commissioner (RC), Major Gen Charles Mbuge has called on legal organs including, police, immigration and the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), to investigate a recent incident where nine fishermen were allegedly robbed their fishing gear in Lake Victoria and left floating for 15 days.
Equally, he strongly warned public officials to avoid engaging in corrupt acts which tarnish the good image of the government.
Elaborating, the RC said a group of nine fishermen were robbed their fishing gear, including engine boats and life jackets and left them floating in deep waters for 15 days until they were rescued by their counterparts from neigbouring Uganda.
“The government is closely investigating the incident and no stone will be left unturned. The legal organs will determine whether the fishermen were Tanzanians while all those who participated in this evil act will be prosecuted,” he said.
He explained that the nine rescued fishermen were in stable condition and were treated at the Bukoba Referral Regional hospital and later discharged.
The incident comes barely a month after five police officers were fired for crossing to neighbouring Malawi wearing uniforms and carrying firearms.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Simon Sirro warned that stern disciplinary action will be taken against culprits who violate the country’s laws.
