Africa-Press – Tanzania. PUBLIC sector leaders have been urged to uphold patriotism and prioritise national interests in the implementation of development projects to ensure they benefit citizens and prevent unnecessary losses to the government.
Principal of the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School (MJNLS), Professor Marcellina Chijoriga made the call yesterday while officiating the opening of a five day training on Sustainable Leadership and Management of Public Sector Enterprises (SLM-PESA) in Kibaha Municipal, Coast Region.
Addressing 40 participants drawn from various public institutions across the country, Professor Chijoriga said the government is making significant efforts to equip leaders with modern leadership skills to enhance performance and accountability in public service.
She emphasised that strong leadership founded on accountability and discipline is essential for institutional success.
“In order for any institution to perform effectively, it must be guided by strong leadership principles rooted in accountability and discipline,” she said.
Professor Chijoriga also underscored the importance of ethical leadership, noting that public officials must avoid malpractice and act in the best interest of the nation.
“Our President, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, has consistently emphasised the need for public sector leaders to uphold integrity and apply sound leadership practices. As leaders, we must understand that every decision we make has a direct impact on the nation,” she said.
She further urged participants to actively engage in preparations for the implementation of the National Development Vision 2050, stressing the need for collective efforts in achieving sustainable development goals.
One of the participants, Ms Caroline Marealle, Principal Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Officer at the Cooperative Audit and Supervision Corporation (COASCO), said she expects to gain valuable leadership skills from the training to improve her performance at work.
The training programme covers a range of topics, including national interests, Pan-Africanism, public sector planning, management for socio-economic transformation, organisational performance management systems and economic diplomacy.
The opening session was also attended by MJNLS Director of Academics, Professor Ana Maria Nhampule, as well as students from the University of Dar es Salaam.
Tanzania has a rich history of leadership focused on national development, rooted in the principles established by its founding leaders. The emphasis on patriotism and accountability in public service has been a consistent theme in Tanzanian governance, particularly under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The current training initiative reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen public sector leadership and align it with the National Development Vision 2050, aiming for sustainable socio-economic transformation.
