Africa-PressTanzania. GOLFERS from four countries; Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Tanzania have been invited to take part at the maiden Lugalo Ladies Golf Open Championship next month.

The inaugural national level event, Lugalo ladies tournament is scheduled to be held from August 28th and 29th this year at the par 72 Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club of Dar es Salaam course.

The year 2021 will be busy for lady golfers in the country as Lugalo Ladies Open comes a few weeks after the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) Ladies Open that was held last week in Dar es Salaam.

New DGC lady captain Sue Van Zly successfully hosted DGC Ladies Open which is also an event of the national status.

The two tournaments fall under the Ladies Golf Union bid to promote golf for ladies and also identify talented golfers for the national teams.

While TPDF Lugalo prepares for the first ever Lugalo Ladies Open, the third event in the pipeline, according to Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) President Sophia Viggo, is Tanzania Ladies Open which will be staged before the end of the year.

The Lugalo Club lady golf captain, Hawa Wanyeche told the Sunday News in Dar es Salaam yesterday that preparation for the event is on a top gear.

“We are heading to stage a colourful event, it is our first time, but we know what it takes to make it memorable, we have already sent invitations to Kenya, Uganda and Zambia, hopefully they will all respond well to our call,” she noted.

Wanyeche has called on sponsors to come forward and support the event that also invites men players to play in the subsidiary category.

“We thank the club’s chairman Michael Luwongo and captain Japhet Masai who have been very supportive,” added Wanyeche.

The event is a walk the talk from TPDF Chairman Luwongo who made the promise last year during Morogoro Ladies Open.

Luwongo promised to bring back to life Lugalo Ladies Open as he always believes ladies have all it takes to flourish if given a chance.

For several years Lugalo has been tirelessly supporting ladies to take part in international golf events staged inside and outside the country, but they were yet to organise theirs.

Under Wanyeche, TPDF Lugalo was also able to organise a Mothers’ Day Golf tournament, the one-day tournament staged in May.

The first ever 18 holes tournament, was special for ladies as it aim to encourage them to play together and harmonize friendship.
