Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government is taking decisive measures to ensure ongoing rains do not disrupt transport services, particularly in areas affected by environmental challenges, the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has said.
During an inspection tour of emergency road works, TANROADS Chief Executive Eng Mohamed Besta said the government had prioritised strengthening infrastructure to reduce the impact of the rainy season on mobility and economic activity.
He made the remarks at Mbande in Kongwa District, Dodoma Region, where TANROADS has completed major improvements on a road section previously prone to damage during heavy rains.
Eng Besta said the project was in its final stages, with engineers and the contractor finalising remaining works.
He noted that ongoing rains have affected various parts of the country, including Njombe—particularly the Itoni–Lusitu road—Ruvuma, Mbeya, Arusha, Rukwa and Katavi, with some areas still under construction when affected.
He said TANROADS is implementing operations in line with the Emergency Response Manual, which guides appropriate action during weather-related disaster situations.
He directed regional managers to intensify supervision of road infrastructure in their areas, not only where rains have already caused damage but also in places not yet affected to prevent future destruction.
