Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Juza Waste Pickers Initiative (JWPI), in collaboration with Global Waste Solutions Company, has submitted a proposal to the Dodoma City Council’s management team to introduce a waste processing and recycling project in the capital.
The project is aimed at reducing the volume of waste being dumped at the Chidaya Landfill in Dodoma.
Presenting the proposal during a recent meeting in the city, JWPI Executive Director Nassib Kitabu stated that the organization is focused on environmental conservation and educating youth involved in waste collection.
“Currently, we are operating in Dodoma City and have partnered with Global Waste Solutions to significantly reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill by 2027. The ultimate goal is to educate the community on waste separation, so we can protect society from the negative impacts of poor waste management and indiscriminate dumping,” Kitabu said.
He explained that the initiative comes in response to the rapid growth of Dodoma City, which he described as the face of the nation.
“Dodoma is the pride of Tanzanians. We thought it wise to start here—to keep the city clean and to ensure a safe environment for its residents. Proper education will help the community understand how to separate waste, as some types can be used to produce compost and other useful products,” he added.
Mr Kitabu further noted that the project will focus on promoting waste separation at both household and institutional levels, while ensuring that recyclable materials are returned to factories. It will also prioritize the separation of solid waste such as plastics from biodegradable waste like food scraps.
On his part, Amir Amir, a solid waste management expert and supervisor from Global Waste Solutions, said the project targets three major cities: Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Moshi.
“This project is vital for Dodoma as the nation’s capital. We plan to establish control centers for solid waste like plastics and paper, and also set up a processing center for biodegradable waste, including food and fruit remains from markets and households. From this, we will produce organic fertilizer and insect-based protein as an alternative feed for livestock,” Amir said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Sanitation and Solid Waste Management Unit at Dodoma City Council, Dickson Kimaro, confirmed that they had officially received the project proposal from JUZA in collaboration with Global Waste Solutions.
“For us at the Dodoma City Council, this is one of our strategic focus areas. We are committed to working with various stakeholders to ensure effective waste recycling, promote separation, and educate citizens on the best practices,” Kimaro said.
He concluded by assuring full cooperation from the Council to ensure that residents of Dodoma benefit from the project.
