Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Minister of State in the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government, Ummy Mwalimu has asked the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Authority (TARURA) staff to strengthen unity and collaboration in order to meet the target to have appropriate road network in the country.
She made the call when launching TARURA Workers’ Council, where she used the occasion to elaborate the government’s plan to have the best roads countrywide.
The minister said that it was one of the priorities of the sixth phase government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to improve roads countrywide.
“The legacy that our president wants to leave behind upon retirement is to see all roads being upgraded that is why, during this financial year (2021/22) the government increased the budget for TARURA from 273bn/- that was provided during the last fiscal year to about 966bn/-,’” she said.
The minister reminded of the recently launched Second Strategic Plan 2021/2022- 20252026, which details how the government is fully committed to implementing infrastructure projects in efforts to spur the country’s economic development.
The government through the TARURA plans to spend 3.6tri/- in the next five years to widen its road network countrywide. With the plan, the government envisages to increase the distance of upgraded roads to tarmac level from the current 2,404.90 to about 3, 855.65 kilometres.
Ms Mwalimu asked TARURA officials to ensure that during the implementation of the projects everybody was considering value for money as she equally asked them to take advantage of ICT development by establishing the component of research which should also be allocated its budget.
Speaking at a similar occasion, TARURA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Engineer Victor Seif, expressed optimism that more roads and bridges would be set up as the government provided more funds in implementing the projects in the second strategic plan.
He told the newly launched TARURA workers’ council to maintain collaboration, unity and peace if meeting the target of connecting the country through an appropriate road infrastructure.
