Africa-Press – Tanzania. TRADERS at the Sabasaba market in Mtwara Mikindani municipality have asked the Mtwara Regional Commissioner Brigadier General Marco Gaguti to go to the market and listen to their reasons for not leaving the market even after an order was issued by the regional authorities for them to leave the market immediately.
The request came a day after the Regional Commissioner asked the traders to immediately relocate to a new and modern market worth 5.3bn/- built by the government.
The RC said that the government has spent a lot of money for the infrastructure of the market and thus compels the traders to make good use of it.
“It is impossible at the government to spend a lot of money to build a market and then it should not be exploited as deserves,” he said.
However, the traders still insisted on the fact that they have concrete reasons for not leaving the market as ordered which the Regional Commissioner has to go and hear them out.
In addition, the chairman of the traders said that their biggest reason for not leaving the markert is due to their long time investment in the area.
“We have contracts here, we have invested here we have built here not with the help of the municipality or the government it is our money, so if you say that the government has invested in the Chuno market for billions, we have also invested here with our own money and we have contracts,” he said.
The new Chuno Market in Mtwara Mikindani Municipality was opened in December 2020 where the Regional officials asked the Sabasaba market traders to move to from Sabasaba to the modern market.
