Africa-PressTanzania. PRESIDENT Hussein Ali Mwinyi has called on Zanzibaris to continue being vigilant against Covid-19, noting that apart from causing health complications to victims, the pandemic has also weakened the country’s economy.

Dr Al-Haji Mwinyi made the appeal in his address to Muslim believers after he joined them for the Friday mass prayer held at the Saateni Masjid (Mosque), West region in Unguja Dr Mwinyi said while the world battles the third wave of the pandemic, “It is necessary for citizens to continue taking all necessary precautions and work hard to address its effects on the country’s economy.

The President also called on Muslims to join other members of the public and continue praying for divine intervention so as to win the war against the pandemic .

On his part, Second Vice President Hemed Suleiman Abdalla said that the public should understand that Covid-19 is a threat to the health and economies, thus they should continue praying for God’s mercy to save Tanzania and the world from the pandemic.

Speaking in Pemba where he joined people for Friday mass prayer, Mr Masoud said it is high time people in Zanzibar and Tanzanians in general worked together in maintaining peace and stability as they intensify the war against the pandemic.

“Let us make the best use of the Government of National Unity (GNU) which has united us politically. It is an opportunity for us to work hard for economic and social development, while taking all necessary precautions against Covid-19,” Masoud said.

The Second VP also joined people in North Unguja where he stressed the need for Zanzibaris to support the government under President Mwinyi by observing laws and regulations and prevent further spread of the pandemic.

According to the Minister for Health, social welfare, Elders, Gender and Children Mr Nassor Ahmed Mazrui, a total of 360 people tested positive between June and 10th August this year, with majority recovering while 24 are still hospitalised and fifteen have died.

The Minister said so far about nine thousand people, mainly medical/health staffs, airports’ and seaports staff, senior citizens and journalists, have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
