Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi yesterday held high-level talks with the Acting United States Ambassador to Tanzania, Andrew Lentz focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding investment opportunities in Zanzibar.
The meeting, held at the State House in Stone Town, brought together senior officials to discuss key areas of partnership between Zanzibar and the United States, particularly in economic development and infrastructure.
During the discussions, President Mwinyi highlighted the ongoing construction of the Mangapwani Integrated Port Project, describing it as a transformative initiative expected to address longstanding challenges in the maritime sector and accelerate Zanzibar’s economic growth.
He explained that the project is not limited to port infrastructure but also includes a 200-megawatt power generation facility, modern fuel storage tanks and a deep-sea port capable of accommodating larger vessels.
“These developments will significantly reduce congestion currently experienced at Malindi Port and improve efficiency in cargo handling,” President Mwinyi said in a press statement from the State House.
He said that such largescale investments are part of Zanzibar’s broader strategy to position itself as a regional trade and logistics hub, capable of attracting both domestic and international investors.
President Mwinyi also assured the United States of Zanzibar’s continued commitment to strengthening cooperation across various sectors and expressed gratitude for America’s longstanding support to Tanzania, including Zanzibar.
He noted that numerous untapped opportunities still exist for American companies and investors, particularly in infrastructure, energy, tourism and the blue economy.
In response, Ambassador Lentz commended the pace of development in Zanzibar, especially in infrastructure projects, noting that such progress is critical for attracting investment, stimulating economic growth and improving citizens’ livelihoods.
He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to expanding cooperation with Zanzibar, particularly in healthcare, climate change, trade and investment, emphasising the importance of sustained partnerships in addressing shared global challenges.
The meeting underscores growing diplomatic and economic ties between Zanzibar and the United States, with both sides expressing optimism about future collaboration and mutual benefits.

In recent years, the region has focused on revitalizing its economy through infrastructure development and attracting foreign investment, particularly from the United States, to enhance its global competitiveness and economic resilience.
