Mwinyi urges new approach to global security

Africa-PressTanzania. ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has asked world leaders to develop a new mentality in addressing chronic problems that threaten global peace and security.

Addressing fellow leaders at the Rally of Hope and launch of Think Tank 2022, which focused on peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula over the weekend, Dr Mwinyi argued that prolonged conflicts in the area was subjecting the entire world to serious insecurity challenges.

“We can no longer afford to continue watching this quarrel, which is sometimes referred to as unmemorable, though its persistence has serious adverse impacts on peace and security of the world,” President Mwinyi told the video conference forum.

He argued that although geographically, Korean Peninsula looks far from Africa but, “It should be remembered that besides the distance, Africa has been participating fully in peace and democracy restoration efforts in the area.”

President Mwinyi said Tanzania, including Zanzibar, has been working with various nations globally to sustain peace and resolve simmering conflicts, which threaten the global peace and tranquility.

The president told the emerging global network of thought leaders and experts from various fields that his goal is to have a prosperous Zanzibar in which all people are united towards speedy social and economic development.

He particularly appreciated the late Seif Sharif Hamad for his acceptance to join the Government of National Unity (GNU) as the first Vice-President.

“Formation of the Government of National Unity is one of the great achievements of my presidency so far,” President Mwinyi said.

He underscored the need to preserve peace and tranquility to accelerate social and economic development in Zanzibar, saying the islands have so far recorded big strides in burying their disputes due to different political inclinations.

The president reaffirmed Zanzibar’s resolve to wisely use her endowed resources and geographical opportunities for the islanders’ economic prosperity.

He invited serious investors in the country, assuring that his administration is determined to strengthen and promote investment opportunities, with special incentives offered to investors in Pemba Island.

“Briefly, my prime goal is to pursue the blue economy; through close collaboration with the private sector, I aspire to transform Zanzibar into a business hub along the Indian Ocean belt,” charged Dr Mwinyi.

He said Zanzibar is endowed with sufficient resources and opportunities to build a strong economy, which can create jobs, reduce poverty and speedily develop the country.
