Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Namibian President, Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has made a historic visit to the African Liberation Heritage Centre in Magomeni, Dar es Salaam, where she witnessed key historical records of the African Liberation struggles preserved through written documents and photographs.
Welcoming her to the centre, the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Professor Palamagamba Kabudi, described the visit as a historic event and a great honour for Tanzania.
He said President Nandi-Ndaitwah is an important part of the centre’s history, being one of the freedom fighters from Southern African countries who received refuge and training in Tanzania during the liberation era.
Professor Kabudi emphasised that although the centre serves as a museum, it also stands as a symbol of identity and pride for all Africans.
He stressed the importance of continuing to preserve and safeguard the historical records held at the centre for the benefit of both current and future generations.
The centre, established on grounds that formerly served as the office of the Liberation Committee of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), highlights Tanzania’s significant role in supporting liberation movements across the African continent. At that time, Tanzania chaired the Liberation Committee and provided various forms of support to liberation fighters from countries seeking independence.
During her visit, President Nandi-Ndaitwah also had the opportunity to meet with some of the elders who were once members of the Liberation Committee, including Ambassador Christopher Liundi. She also reunited with former neighbours from the Magomeni area, where she once lived while studying and actively participating in the Southern African liberation struggles, particularly for her home country, Namibia.
This visit once again underscored Tanzania’s pivotal contribution to Africa’s liberation movements and the enduring solidarity among African nations.
