NANENANE WEEK: Major boost for Tanzania’s agricultural sector

Africa-Press – Tanzania. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has announced a significant breakthrough for Tanzania’s agricultural, fishing, and livestock sectors, revealing that the country has secured reliable markets for its products in major economies.

Officiating the Farmers’ Exhibition (Nanenane) 2024 at Nzuguni Nane Nane grounds in Dodoma on Thursday, the Prime Minister said the opportunity was secured after assuring these markets of a consistent supply of agricultural products that meet their standards.

Mr. Majaliwa noted that by June 2024, the government had secured markets in China, India, the United States, Pakistan, and Brazil, exporting products worth $2.3 trillion to these countries.

He also highlighted that the exhibition theme, “Choose Good Local Government Leaders for Sustainable Development in Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries,” underscores the importance of electing honest leaders to promote various sectors, urging citizens to participate in the upcoming elections scheduled for October 2024.

Majaliwa emphasized that the agriculture, livestock, and fisheries sectors are the backbone of Tanzania’s economy, employing 65.6 percent of the population and achieving more than 100 percent food self-sufficiency.

He said this success has prompted the government to aggressively seek and secure international markets, ensuring sustainable economic growth.

Meanwhile, the Premier inaugurated Mobile Coffee Cafés, a new initiative aimed at increasing youth engagement in the coffee value chain across the country.

The launch took place on Thursday during the opening ceremony of the Nanenane International Agricultural Exhibition, held nationally at the Nzuguni Grounds in Dodoma City.

Majaliwa praised the Ministry of Agriculture and the Tanzania Coffee Board for their innovative approach with this project, emphasizing that it will significantly contribute to job creation, particularly for the youth.

The Mobile Coffee Cafés will be managed by the Tanzania Coffee Board through the Building a Better Tomorrow (BBT) project, which operates under the Ministry of Agriculture.

On his part, Minister of Agriculture Hussein Bashe announced that the government has begun building 10 agricultural centers that will be equipped with 500 tractors and 800 power tillers.

He said these facilities, set to be launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, aim to provide affordable equipment rentals to small-scale farmers, further bolstering agricultural productivity.

“Following the fertilizer subsidy, the government is now focused on providing equipment subsidies, aiming for 10,000 tractors in operation by 2030,” he stated.

He said the agricultural sector’s growth rate has increased from 2.7 percent in 2022/23 to 4.2 percent in 2023/24, with aspirations to reach 10 percent by 2030.

He also highlighted that exports have surged by $2.3 billion and food self-sufficiency has risen by 130 percent, aligning with the objectives of the National Development Plan 2025.

The Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Alexander Mnyeti, added that the exhibition would feature livestock competitions to promote technological advancements in animal husbandry.

The Nane Nane exhibition will run for eight days across seven regions: the Southern Highlands Zone in Mbeya, the Eastern Zone in Morogoro, the Western Zone in Tabora, the Northern Zone in Arusha, the Southern Zone in Lindi, the Western Lake Zone in Mwanza, and the Eastern Lake Zone in Bariadi.

This event showcases Tanzania’s agricultural potential and commitment to sustainable development, setting the stage for future growth and the expansion of international trade in agricultural products.
