Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Minister for Information, Communication and Informa- tion Technology, Nape Nnauye has insisted on timely completion of the residential addresses and postcode system project, calling on regions that are still lagging behind to speed up the exercise.
Mr Nape issued the call on Monday at the start of a tour of various regions to inspect the implementation of the project and raise awareness of the importance of the residential addresses and postcode system.
Speaking at Dodoma Airport, Nape said that the tour aimed at ensuring that Tanzanians are served with residential addresses in order to attain the government objective of having national addresses which will identify residential areas, offices and business premises.
“This exercise launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan which has now reached 69 per cent aims to ensure that every Tanzanian has access to residential addresses to facilitate the delivery of various social and business services,” said Minister Nape.
According to the schedule, the minister on Monday visited Tanga, Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions and will tomorrow proceed to Ruvuma, Mtwara and Lindi regions to learn how the areas have succeeded in implementing the project.
He said the overall objective is to come up with best ways to fast-track the project which President Samia Suluhu Hassan wants to be completed by May 30, this year.
Mr Nape noted that as Tanga and Dar es Salaam regions are lagging behind in the implementation of the project, Lindi and Ruvuma are on the right track.
“We want all regions to excel in the implementation of this crucial exercise and we will encourage other regions to learn from the ones which have succeeded,” he said.
He called upon citizens to support the project since it is for their own benefits as he urged them to mobilise their neighbours and friends to support the project which among others would improve service delivery and enhance security of the available infrastructure.
Launching the postcode system in February, this year, President Samia said residential address and postcode system is very important for a sustainable development and it should be completed soon as the country is set to execute census exercise August 23, this year.
She said the system will connect the country to the rest of the world and strengthen safety and security as well as enable economic and social de- velopment.
The system, she said, will also end land conflicts that have been facing the country for decades.
This will be so because every person’s information will now be on record.
Speaking during a working session with regional commissioners, President Samia said it was imperative to recognise where every person was to be accessible by service as well as recognise the majority of digital businesses that have been laying low to enable the government to get its taxes.
Initially, the project cost estimates stood at 700bn/-, but the cost was cut down to 28bn/- billion by using local experts to work on the project.
