TANZANIA’s Statistics Bureaus from both sides of the Union in collaboration with the World Bank have started the process for development of the second phase of the Tanzania Statistical Master Plan (TSMP) following the expiration of the first plan in June 2018, the government has confirmed.

Speaking at Dodoma’s Takwimu House yesterday, Deputy Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Employment, Youth and the Disabled, Ummy Nderiananga said the plan seeks among other issues to build the foundation for data revolution aiming at sustainable development.

Also known as the National Strategy for Development of Statistics (NSDS), the master plan is being developed by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in collaboration with the office of the Chief Statisticians in Zanzibar (OCGS).

She was speaking during a stakeholders meeting to discuss the 2022 Population and Housing Census Management and Implementation Strategic Handbook so that they can air their views on who will facilitate the country’s next census scheduled for Sunday August 28, 2022.

The pilot Population and Housing Census is expected to be conducted next month so that officials who will undertake the exercise get accustomed to procedures and equipment to be used next year.

Ms Nderiananga who represented the Minister for Finance and Planning, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, said the new master plan will help the government to have timely data that would help in policy issues.

“We need to put up development plans that need real time data, and the previous statistics will help us to plan for the future,” she maintained.

She further asked NBS to work on all the views and recommendations that will be provided by stakeholders at the meeting to discuss the next census strategic handbook.
