Africa-Press – Tanzania. IN efforts to support education for girls in the country, a Non-Governmental Organisation-Victoria Foundation has donated sanitary pads worth 15m/- to girl students in Simiyu region.
The donated sanitary pads are aimed at ensuring that girl students do not miss classes during their periods.
Receiving the donation for primary and secondary school students, Simiyu Regional Commissioner, Mr David Kafulila said that the support will help to improve girls’ attendance at school because they will not need to miss classes due to lack of sanitary towels.
According to him, every month there are girls who miss classes for three to seven days in Simiyu region due to poverty.
“This is why Victoria Foundation has seen the need to support girl students so that they don’t miss classes due to lack of sanitary towels,” he said.
Handing over the donation, Ms Victoria Kamata, who is a founder of Victoria Foundation, said that the main purpose of the project is to help provide teenage girls and young women in Simiyu with sanitary towels.
She said that the initiative will improve students’ confidence because the sanitary towels will be available at schools, adding that it will also reduce stigma against girls , anxiety and discomfort associated with menstrual hygiene management.
“Sanitary items are necessity, not a luxury and the free sanitary pads play an important role in promoting a positive culture around menstrual health, building a supportive environment among the school community,” she said.
According to her, the initiative aims at reducing the stigma associated with girls’ periods, making school a more inclusive place to help students focus on their studies,” she said.
She said that the support will help to provide over 12,600 sanitary pads to students who cannot afford such means of sanitary protection, this intends to support and empower girl students by giving them the confidence to attend school even on their menstrual days,” she said.
