Africa-PressTanzania. The National Institute of Transport (NIT) has signed an agreement with TRES Consult (T) Limited to undertake Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) in a proposed construction of NIT’s Center of Excellence in Aviation and Transport Operations buildings and facilities at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) and Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA).

The NIT’s construction projects at JNIA and KIA is financed by soft loan from the World Bank under the East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP).

The Project’s development objective is to increase the access and improve the quality of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes in selected centers to support regional economic corridors.

The signing was done to enable NIT to comply with the government and the World Bank regulations and safeguards that require preparation of site-specific ESIA necessary for statutory clearance with the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) and World Bank.

The NIT Rector, Prof Zacharia Mganilwa, said, “We are confident with TRES Consult (T) Limited that they will properly conduct environmental impact assessments to our proposed projects at JNIA and KIA,”

On his part, NIT Deputy Rector-Academic, Research and Consultancy Dr Prosper Mgaya insists: “We confidently believe that TRES Consult (T) Limited will complete the work given on time so as to pave a way for other activities under the project to continue as planned.”

Speaking at the side line of the signing ceremony, Centre of Excellence in Aviation and Transport Operations (CoEATO)’s Centre Manager at NIT Abubakar Noor said: “After the Environment Impact Assessments, we are planning to construct four buildings, one at JNIA and the other three at KIA.”

Mr Noor pointed out that the buildings which will include aircraft hangars will give good experience training to students who are now undertaking aircraft engineering courses so as to increase the number of experts in a move to cover the big gap that the nation is currently facing.

TRES Consult (T) Limited Managing Director Bashiru Abdul said: “We wish to thank your esteemed Institution for giving our company the opportunity to work on these notable assignments and we are kindly promising to undertake this work diligently and accordingly with the agreement that we have signed here. Our Company is dully certified and registered by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) as Firm of Environmental Experts that is entitled to undertake Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Environmental Audits (EA) of development projects in mainland Tanzania.”
