On his part, the NIT Rector Prof Zacharia Mganilwa applauded the World Bank support under the EASTRIP project, saying the construction of five buildings at the Institute will commence immediately and finish on time as indicated in the contract.

“In a special way, we are appreciating the World Bank for supporting our Regional Center of Excellence in Aviation and Transport Operations (CoEATO). The Centre is very important in producing a capable workforce that will satisfy the aviation subsector,” he said.

Prof Mganilwa said NIT is one of the beneficiaries of the EASTRIP project launched in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in June 2019 whereby Tanzania is participating with Ethiopia and Kenya.

He said that the project supports the development of highly specialized Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes as well as industry-recognised short-term certificate-level training, and will target regional priority sectors in transport, energy, manufacturing and ICT.

He pointed out that through the EASTRIP project, NIT will receive 21.2 million US dollars equivalent to 49bn/- for strengthening governance and training in aviation through CoEATO.

“PwC is an independent verification agency for the EASTRIP Project and is satisfied with our performance. We have already achieved more than 75 per cent just in three years of the project, with this achievement we have obtained 11.3 million US dollars equivalent to 26. 3bn/-,” he said.

“This week, we have already done with the review of the project’s objectives for the fourth year and we expect again to receive more than 15bn/- to continue implementing the project.”

Speaking during the event, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof Caroline Nombo said that the government will continue administering the EASTRIP project at the NIT until it ensures that all of the goals are achieved.

“The buildings are very important in providing training to aviation students, therefore constructions must begin quickly while observing all the legal and technical procedures to complete the work with quality and in time as expected,” she said.
