According to the tournament draw released yesterday, a prominent highlight of the competition will be the presence of General (rtd) George Waitara, after whom the famous event is named.

The tournament promises a thrilling contest between seasoned golfers and emerging talents. General Waitara’s team, featuring Edmund Mndolwa, Ambassador Ombeni Sefue and Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) Chairman Gilman Kasiga, will be the last group to tee off at 1:00 PM, adding an element of excitement to the day.

Adding to the prestige of the event is Bunge Golf Team captain and Member of Parliament (MP) Nape Nnauye, who is part of the tournament’s prominent lineup.

Their participation underscores the event’s diverse appeal, attracting leaders from various sectors.

The tournament commences at 6:10 AM, with multiple groups set to navigate the challenging par-72 Lugalo course.

Competitors include retired military officers, military officers, diplomats, corporate leaders and passionate golf enthusiasts all vying for top honours in this annual showdown.

Among the rising stars to watch is Tanzania 2024 Order of Merit winner Isiaka Daudi, fresh from his participation in the Clutch Tour Tier 1 Tournament in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

His presence at the event highlights Lugalo’s role in nurturing the next generation of golf champions.

Speaking ahead of the event, Lugalo Chairman Michael Luwongo emphasised the tournament’s importance in Tanzania’s golfing calendar.

“With a well-structured schedule and high-level competition, the NBC Waitara Trophy 2025 is set to be an exciting and highly anticipated event,” he noted.

More than just a competition, the event offers a complete golfing experience, with participants enjoying complimentary breakfast, dinner and live entertainment to enhance the tournament atmosphere.

Generous prizes, including cash rewards, await top performers, making the stakes even higher.

Luwongo also expressed gratitude to the tournament’s title sponsor, the National Bank of Commerce (NBC), for their on-going support in promoting golf and sports development in Tanzania.

The 2024 Waitara Trophy witnessed a sensational performance from Boniphace Japhet, who carded an impressive 67 net to claim the overall title.

Japhet won his first major championship on his home course, defeating 120 players and playing with a handicap of 23.
