Africa-Press – Tanzania. POLICE are holding a number of suspects for allegedly producing, selling and distributing fake and expired medicine in various regions in the country.
The suspects are also accused of taking fake and substandard medical equipment to the market. The accused were nabbed during a five-day operation carried out by the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children.
Other partners in the operation included the Pharmacy Council of Tanzania, Veterinary Council of Tanzania and the ministry of State, in the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government. Speaking to reporters yesterday, the Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Dr Doroth Gwajima said the suspects will be arraigned soon after completion of the investigations.
According to her, 20 case files had been opened at police stations countrywide and that other disciplinary measures had been taken against owners of health centres, dispensaries, pharmacies and hospitals that have been providing fake and expired medicines.
