Africa-Press – Tanzania. POLICE in Coast Region have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining strong relations with journalists, particularly as the country heads towards the upcoming General Election.

The assurance was given during the Regional Dialogue on Safety and Security of Journalists, held recently in Kibaha Municipality.

The dialogue aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two sides and promoting education on peace and national security.

Speaking during the event, Regional Police Commander (RPC) ACP Salim Morcase stressed the importance of collaboration between the police and the media in helping communities understand the value of peace and stability.

“The police have implemented reforms that have strengthened our relationship with journalists. This is evident in the way we currently work together in our region,” said ACP Morcase.

He urged both parties to prioritise the national interest by adhering to the 4Rs doctrine: Resilience, Reforms, Rebuilding and Reconciliation championed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

“Journalists must always observe professional ethics and the Police must also fulfil their duties responsibly. Let us all uphold professionalism and remember that the people depend on us for their safety and security,” he added.

The RPC also commended journalists in the region for their constructive reporting, which he said helps the government to perform its duties effectively and enables citizens to understand ongoing efforts to improve their living standards.

He encouraged them to continue their good work with the same spirit of professionalism.

On his part, Coast Regional Press Club Chairperson Harold Shemsanga said the dialogue was jointly organised by the Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC) in partnership with the Police Department.

“This is one of several dialogues being conducted across the country to strengthen cooperation and performance between the Police and journalists, especially as the nation prepares for the General Elections,” he explained.

The dialogue brought together local government leaders, representatives from the Regional Secretariat, lawyers, non-governmental organisations, Police officers and journalists from across the region.
