Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi will be on road here tomorrow participating with athletes in the Blue Economy Marathon, a charity event planned to mark his one year anniversary as the Isles president.
The state house office here confirmed yesterday saying President Mwinyi will run in the 4km race starting at Mapinduzi Square at Kisonge area to end at Amaan Stadium in Unguja.
Besides running in the 4km race, President Mwinyi will also flag off the main event officially known as Blue Economy Half Marathon which will cover 21km distance, according to Abdallah Idrissa Majura, the event’s organising committee chairman. Majura named NMB Bank as main sponsor of the 21km Half Marathon while KCB Bank has bankrolled the 10km race.
“We the organising committee members confirm that President Mwinyi will join us in the race and we would like to invite all residents here to join us in this event at Nyerere Square on Saturday,” said Majura.
In retrospect Majura also called upon elite runners listed to compete in the 21km Half Marathon to report early at the venue prior to the start of the race. He said the 21km Half Marathon will be flagged off at 06:00 am at Mapinduzi Square. Besides the elite runners and other residents, the organising committee has also invited participants from various government institutions like JKU, KMKM, KVZD, Nyuki Brigade and Prisons.
“We want to see the majority of residents here participate in the event as runners or joggers,” said Majura. Until late on Thursday there were over 600 elite runners registered to compete in the main event. He said they come from both the Tanzania Mainland and Isles.
The winners of the NMB Bank Half Marathon will pocket 1,200,000, while the runners up will get 800,000 and 500,000/- is set for the third-placed winners of men and women categories.
