Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE North Pemba Regional Commissioner (RC), Ms Mgeni Khatib Yahya, has directed leaders of Wete Municipal Council and Micheweni District Council to take immediate action, using existing laws and regulations, to curb urban environmental degradation and enhance the attractiveness of towns.
She said weak enforcement and inadequate supervision have contributed to disorderly urban settings, calling for decisive measures to prevent environmental destruction and promote clean, orderly and appealing towns.
Ms Yahya made the remarks while addressing residents during a regional environmental clean-up exercise held in Wete Town.
She identified indiscriminate waste disposal as one of the major causes of environmental degradation, noting that poor urban cleanliness damages the region’s image and hinders social and economic development.
“We must keep our towns clean, avoid dumping waste indiscriminately and properly maintain urban areas. This will improve the appearance and dignity of our towns,” she said.
Wete District Commissioner, Mr Abdalla Rashid Ali, reminded residents that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility, urging them to dispose of waste only at designated sites.
“There are specific areas set aside for waste disposal. I urge residents to protect our environment because filth lowers the status of our town,” he said.
Micheweni District Commissioner, Mr Khatib Juma Mjaja, encouraged residents to make cleanliness part of their daily routine, stressing that a clean environment is essential for good health and sustainable community development.
The Chairperson of the Wete District Council, Mr Hassan Ali Hamad, also called on residents to discard the misconception that cleanliness is solely the responsibility of municipal authorities, saying environmental protection requires collective effort from all citizens.
