Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi has urged Zanzibaris to continue praying for peace and unity, saying the prevailing situation reflects citizens’ collective commitment to stability and harmony.

Dr Mwinyi, made the remarks on Monday during a special iftar he hosted for members of the party’s National Executive Committee at the State House grounds in the Urban West Region.

The gathering brought together senior CCM leaders, religious leaders and other party officials, alongside the First Lady, Mariam Mwinyi. Speaking during the event, the president said Zanzibar continues to enjoy peace after the October 2025 General Election and called on people to maintain prayers and unity to safeguard the nation’s stability.

He thanked the guests for attending the iftar and wished Muslims blessings during the final days of the holy month of Ramadan.

CCM Urban Region Chairman Talib Ali Talib thanked the president for hosting the gathering, describing the gesture as a sign of faith, unity and love for the people he leads.

A day earlier, President Mwinyi joined Muslims and residents of the South Unguja Region for another community iftar held at Dr Ali Mohammed Shein Hall.

He said the Ramadan gatherings have become an important tradition that brings together people from different communities and strengthens social cohesion.

“This is a good and blessed opportunity that unites people from different groups and strengthens the spirit of togetherness among people,” he said.

The event marked the conclusion of the president’s annual Ramadan tradition of hosting iftar gatherings across all five regions of Zanzibar.

Speaking on behalf of the South Region leadership, Central District Commissioner Rajab Ali Rajab assured the president that residents continue to support his development efforts and thanked him for organising the communal iftar.

During the event, Dr Mwinyi also handed over iftar donations to the Zanzibar Association for the Blind, provided by the Zanzibar International Development Organization (ZIDO).

Meanwhile, First Lady Mariam Mwinyi has called on Muslims to strengthen the culture of reading and memorising the Holy Qur’an as a way of promoting moral values and unity in society.

She said learning and memorising the Qur’an plays a vital role in shaping a Godfearing generation guided by strong ethics and Islamic principles.

“Learning and memorising the Qur’an is a foundation for building a morally upright society because its teachings guide us to do good and avoid wrongdoing in our daily lives,” she said.

Her message was delivered by Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training Ms Khadija Salum Ali during a Qur’an memorisation competition held at Mwembeshauri Mosque.

The deputy minister said such competitions provide an important platform for Muslims, especially young people, to demonstrate their memorisation skills while encouraging deeper religious learning.

She also stressed the importance of safeguarding peace in the country and commended President Mwinyi for his continued efforts to maintain stability and harmony in Zanzibar.

The competition, organised by the Mwembeshauri Muslim Women’s Association, brought together more than 30 participants, including adults who competed in memorising the Qur’an from the first to the second Juz.
