Africa-Press – Tanzania. KILIMANJARO Regional Commissioner Stephen Kagaigai has urged the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) management to put in place resilient infrastructure to ward off Covid-19 fourth wave.

Speaking during his work visit to the airport, Kagaigai underscored the importance of the airport to take precautions as the fourth wave lurks.

“Already various countries in the world have begun to announce the existence of the fourth wave of Covid-19 so it is good to be ready to regulate and serve tourists from countries that have already announced the existence of the new variant,” challenged the regional commissioner.

He equally urged the airport staff to get vaccinated to reduce the spread of the disease.

“The killer virus evolves and spreads rapidly, we must therefore continue to follow the directives issued by the health ministry and ensure that those who have not been vaccinated are vaccinated to reduce the number of infections and deaths caused by the disease,” he said.

The regional commissioner also urged the KIA management to fast-track the procurement of two modern fire trucks so that the airport becomes more secure.

Earlier, Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO) Acting Managing Director Christine Mwakatobe informed the regional commissioner that her office had ordered two well equipped vehicles to enhance the security of the ‘Gateway to Africa’s Wildlife Heritage’.

“These two fire engines are of latest technology, and we’ve already started training our fire fighters on how to operate them,” she disclosed.

Ms Mwakatobe further added that KADCO had also purchased six new cargo inspection machines.

She equally assured the regional commissioner that her office would continue investing on latest technology in keeping the airport safe.

Last month, the airport held a culture safety week which is also part of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines.
