Africa-Press – Tanzania. INCREASING use of baby diapers, commonly known as pampers is highly contributing to environment pollution due to improper disposal, and some members of the Zanzibar House of Representatives have recommended prohibition of the absorbent materials.

“Pampers are littering our environment, the best way is to ban them like the government did with plastic bags,” Mr Haji Shabaan Waziri (Uzini) said as the Minister responsible for environment, Dr Saada Mkuya Salum said growing science and technology has contributed to use of pampers.

“I think we need to improve waste management, starting with public awareness so that everyone discards wastes in the proper way, and to avoid littering the environment,” Ms Salum said, insisting that everyone should be responsible to keep the environment clean.

She said that her office is collaborating with the Ministry of Regional administration, local governments, municipal and town councils to find the best way to control wastes in the islands- rural areas, towns and beaches.
