Samia: How CAG reports help to boost performance

Africa-Press – Tanzania. DODOMA: President Samia Suluhu Hassan has stated that the performance of various public institutions in the country has improved thanks to the Controller and Auditor General (CAG)’s yearly report, which sheds light on areas of improvement.

Speaking shortly after receiving the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) performance report and Controller and Auditor General (CAG) audit reports for the 2022/2023 fiscal year, President Samia said the government has been investing significantly in the improvement of public institutions, leading to a reduction in qualified opinions.

The Head of State noted that these improvements have fostered trust in public institutions among citizens and internationally.

“We shall address the flaws that have been uncovered, and next year, some of them will hopefully not be repeated. These reports help us reduce losses, as we have heard from the examples mentioned by the CAG… some institutions, despite making losses, are progressing; the losses of last year are not the same as those of this year… we are making progress, and there will come a point where they will be profitable,” she stated.

Additionally, President Samia highlighted that the reports have helped boost revenue collection in the country, while also commending the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) for its various efforts in combating corruption.

Presenting his report earlier, the CAG, Mr. Kichere, stated that in the fiscal year 2022/23, he issued a total of 1,209 inspection documents, of which 222 documents were related to regional administrations and local governments, 215 to public institutions, 475 to the central government, 19 to political parties, and 299 to development projects.

According to the CAG, from the documents, a total of 1,197, equivalent to 99 percent, received qualified opinions.

“The audit documents show that the preparation of the accounts is satisfactory and that the procedures and preparation of the accounts are largely considered,” he stated.
