Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan will today depart for Maputo, Mozambique for a two-day state visit.

According to a press statement released by the Directorate of Presidential Communications on Tuesday, President Samia’s visit follows a special invitation from Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo.

The Head of the State is also scheduled to be the Guest of Honour at the celebration to mark 50 years of Mozambique’s independence from Portugal colonial rule.

The Golden Jubilee celebration will be held at Machava Stadium in Maputo, where President Samia will join other dignitaries in commemorating Mozambique’s historic milestone.

While in Maputo, President Samia will also visit the Mozambican Heroes’ Square, where she is expected to lay a wreath in honour of those who lost their lives during the country’s liberation struggle.

Tanzania has a long-standing historical bond with Mozambique, having hosted and supported Mozambican freedom fighters during their quest for independence.

Mozambique gained independence from Portuguese colonial rule in 1975, after a protracted armed struggle led by the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) in early 1960s.

Founded in 1962, FRELIMO spearheaded the armed resistance against Portuguese forces.

The liberation war officially began in September 1964 and continued for over a decade, marked by guerilla warfare and widespread support from other African nations and international allies.

Tanzania was one of the most steadfast and strategic allies during Mozambique’s liberation struggle.

Under the leadership of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Tanzania provided critical support to FRELIMO by offering sanctuary, training camps, logistical assistance and diplomatic backing.

The southern regions of Tanzania, particularly areas near the border, became staging grounds for FRELIMO fighters, while Dar es Salaam served as a vital political and operational hub.

Tanzania’s unwavering support was rooted in its strong pan-Africanist ideals and commitment to the decolonisation of Africa.

The country was also a founding member of the Frontline States, a coalition of African countries that coordinated efforts to support liberation movements across southern Africa.

President Samia’s participation in Mozambique’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations is a symbolic gesture for the enduring friendship and historical ties between the two nations.
