Africa-PressTanzania. PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to grace the commemoration of Workers’ Day which is set to be celebrated at national level in Mwanza.

Vice-President Dr Philip Mpango and Prime Minister Mr Kassim Majaliwa are among top government leaders who are expected to accompany the Head of State amid workers’ expectation of improvement of their welfare.

Mwanza Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr John Mongella told reporters that preparations were on top gear for the historical welcome and celebration in the region. President Samia is expected to grace May Day for the first time as the Head of State.

“Today we are commemorating the international worker’s day which its foundation was the struggles and gains made by workers and the labour movements around 1885 in Europe,” he said.

Mr Mongella (pictured) stressed that his region has been privileged to host such a big historic event and asked workers and the public to welcome the president in the region and attend the celebrations to be held at the CCM Kirumba Stadium.

“Workers are the backbone of the economy and the wealth creation in our country, the commemoration of this day at national level in our region is a great honour, we are very grateful to our president,” he said.

Mr Mongella said preparations for the occasion so far has reached 99 per cent. Recently, President Samia promised to improve worker’s welfare.

She said her government is looking forward to strengthening codes of conducts, emphasize on the adherence to the laws and regulations as well as make sure workers fulfill their responsibilities as required.

However, the Head of State said the government is keen to ensure workers welfare are improved.

“We are going to look into workers’ welfare and make sure there are required improvements to enable them perform their duties effectively,” she noted.

International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in most countries and often referred to as May Day, is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement and occurs every year on May 1st. International Labour Day is observed globally to promote rights of workers.
