Samia to launch mega fertiliser factory

Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is, on June 28, this year, expected to launch a massive fertiliser factory ‘Intracom’in the country’s capital, Dodoma.

The factory, whose construction began in July 2021, has an impressive installed capacity of one million tonnes of fertilizer, marking a significant milestone in Tanzania’s agricultural sector, cementing its status as a regional leader in fertiliser production.

Agriculture Minister Hussein Bashe announced the forthcoming event during a news conference in Dodoma, stating: “This is the biggest fertiliser industry in the East African region and we are already witnessing interest from neighbouring countries eager to purchase fertiliser from Intracom.”

The project represents a substantial investment of 180 million US dollar (about 465.3bn/-), funded by business entrepreneurs from Burundi.

Mr Bashe highlighted that the President of Burundi, Everist Ndayishimie, has also confirmed his attendance at the inauguration, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the project and its potential regional significance.

With the factory now complete and operational, Intracom is expected to create approximately 1,805 direct jobs, while also providing around 5,000 indirect employment opportunities, a boom for the local economy.

“This factory will not only boost agricultural productivity but will also serve as a catalyst for job creation and economic development in the region,” Bashe added.

Chief Executive Officer of Intracom, Ndwimana Nazaire estimates that around 4,000 participants will be present at the muchanticipated launch ceremony.

Their enthusiasm reflects the widespread hopes vested in this project, which promises to enhance Tanzania’s capacity to meet fertiliser demands and strengthen regional trade relations.
