Samia warns errant leaders

Africa-PressTanzania. PRESIDENT Samia has reminded all District Commissioners (DCs) and District Executive Di- rectors (DEDs) on fostering and maintaining mu- tual respect among themselves, while discharging their duties.

Ms Samia warned that DEDs and DCs engaged in squabbles at the expense of people’s development will not be spared by her government. The president, who was finalising her tour of Arusha Region in Longido yesterday, warned that the two cadres will not be spared for any kind of insubordination.

“Those holding such key positions have a noble duty of fostering discipline at their work places or risk getting fired,” she cautioned.

President Samia challenged her appointees to maintain mutual relationships and put people’s welfare beyond anything else. “You used to have an undisciplined DED who would always defy authority; the truth is I would have fired but opted to give him a second chance to take stock and learn from his mistakes,” President Samia told a cheering crowd at Longido town. President Samia challenged DEDs to live up to expectations, which among others are to be the sole accounting officers for their respective areas.

She equally urged the staff at district councils to exhibit vigilance, hard work and accountability. The president who had earlier toured the ongoing construction of the 15.7bn/- water project in Longido District urged authorities to protect the project at all costs.

According to Ms Samia, the water, whose source starts from the Africa rooftop Mt Kilimanjaro, also ought to be protected by Kilimanjaro National Park wildlife rangers.

“I urge all park wardens and rangers to do the same to other water sources elsewhere,” she directed.

President Samia noted that she was aware of a number of individuals, who were attempting to tamper with the source, urging authorities to have them arrested.

Briefing the Head of State earlier, Water Minister Jumaa Aweso exuded confidence that once completed; the project will see water free flowing as far as Namanga town.

“Water will be abundantly available in Longido and Namanga, come 2021,” he said.

According to the Minister Aweso, the project is fully funded from internal sources. In another development, President Samia put to bed the prospects of elevating Namanga’s status into a township. She insisted that there are criteria of getting to such a desired stage, noting that Namanga which borders Kenya was yet to meet the threshold.

“The sources of economy in Namanga are still wanting coupled by its snail-paced growth, we still have a lot to do to get to that stage,” she revealed.

According to President Samia, elevating Namanga’s status will be tantamount to suppressing Longido, another bustling area in Arusha.
