SAMIA’S CALL TO PARENTS: Guide, talk to children

Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has called on parents and community leaders to take a more active role in guiding and mentoring young people, emphasising the importance of providing support and direction to help them navigate challenges and make positive life choices.

She said that many of the youths who took part in the recent General Election unrest were influenced by crowd behaviour rather than personal intent.

Speaking shortly after arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), Dr Samia said the events showed that large numbers of youths followed the momentum of the group, calling on families to counsel their children and help reinforce calm in their communities.

“We should talk to our children. I understand that in recent events, many young people did not fully understand what they were doing, they were simply following the crowd. So we should talk to our children,” she said.

President Samia stressed that peace must be protected at all times, cautioning citizens against actions that could destabilise the country. “These matters are not something to experiment in a country.

Therefore, I am asking fellow parents and all citizens to continue maintaining peace in our areas,” she added.

Her appeal comes shortly after she inaugurated a sevenmember independent inquiry commission, chaired by former Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman, to investigate the violence that occurred during the 2025 General Election.

The commission has been given a threemonth mandate, subject to review, and will operate under the Commissions of Inquiry Act of 2023, Chapter 32.

When launching the commission earlier, President Samia said it will examine the root cause of the incident, identify who or what triggered it, and determine why young people entered the streets to demand their rights.

She said the investigation will also review statements issued by political parties.

The commission will further assess the relationship between political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission, and review allegations that some youths were financially influenced to join the disturbances.

President Samia said the team would also examine the role of local and foreign NGOs, as well as the measures taken by law enforcement during the unrest.

She assured the public that the commission is fully facilitated with working tools and a supporting secretariat to ensure it performs effectively. The findings, she said, will help Tanzania strengthen its systems and guide future reconciliation efforts.

President Samia arrived at Kilimanjaro International Airport yesterday ahead of her trip to Arusha, where she is scheduled to officiate at the commissioning of new officers of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) at the Monduli-based Military Academy today.

As the inquiry began, she reiterated her call for calm and vigilance. “Let us continue to protect peace in our areas,” she said.
