Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRIME Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, has called on Tanzanians to uphold unity and solidarity, regardless of differing ideologies or religious affiliations, in order to maintain the country’s enduring peace and stability.

The Premier made the remarks yesterday during a special consecration and installation service for the new Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania – Mwanga Diocese (ELCT-MD), Bishop Dr Daniel Mono, held in Kilimanjaro Region.

“The government recognises the strong solidarity among religious institutions, government leadership in Kilimanjaro and citizens at large, which continues to foster peace in our country,” said Mr Majaliwa who represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Conveying greetings from President Samia, the Prime Minister congratulated Bishop Dr Mono on his appointment, wishing him good health and success in his new leadership role.

“Your appointment reflects that you met all the necessary criteria to lead the Diocese of Mwanga. We wish you well in fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to you,” Mr Majaliwa said.

He also commended the Head of the ELCT, Bishop Dr Alex Malasusa, for the Church’s significant contributions to national development.

“The government appreciates and respects the vital work done by the Church and other religious communities, which supports our shared goals, such as environmental preservation and the promotion of moral values,” he said.

He assured continued government collaboration with religious institutions to support their initiatives, which he described as essential to the nation’s future.

The Prime Minister urged Tanzanians to pray for the nation and its leaders especially President Samia’s health so she can continue her leadership with integrity and commitment.

He also called on religious leaders and citizens to pray for the country’s continued peace, while emphasising the urgent need to combat drug abuse.

“Religious leaders, I sincerely urge you to join forces in the fight against drug abuse. It’s a threat to our current and future generations. If we do not take action now, we risk weakening the very foundation of our nation,” he warned.

Mr Majaliwa affirmed the government’s ongoing efforts in fighting drug trafficking and abuse, including the acquisition of advanced equipment to detect and disrupt illegal drug activities.

On his part, ELCT Presiding Bishop Dr Alex Malasusa urged Tanzanians, particularly those in leadership, to resist the temptation of revenge and instead embrace mercy.

“Let us be merciful, for our God is merciful. Do not use your positions to settle scores. Let people see God’s mercy through your leadership, not your vengeance,” he said.

Addressing the newly installed Bishop, Dr Malasusa encouraged him to lead with compassion and to be a symbol of peace and reconciliation within the Diocese.

“You assume this role at a challenging time, when misunderstandings are common. Be a man of peace and unity — that is your divine calling,” he said.

He assured Bishop Mono of the Church’s support and prayed for his strength and good health to serve effectively.

In his remarks, Bishop Dr Mono expressed his gratitude to President Samia for honouring his invitation and to Prime Minister Majaliwa for representing her.

He pledged to work closely with the faithful of the Mwanga Diocese to continue the legacy of the late Bishop Dr Chediel Sendoro, who passed away in a car crash on September 9th, last year.

Dr Mono was elected as the second bishop of the Mwanga Diocese during the General Assembly meeting held on March 10th, this year.

The Diocese, home to over 17,000 congregants, elected him while he was serving in Burundi.
