Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has invested 5.1tri/- over the past four years under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership to improve education infrastructure across the country.

Deputy Minister in the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Ms Zainab Katimba, made the statement yesterday in the National Assembly while responding to an inquiry from Kibaha Rural MP Michael Mwakamo (CCM).

Mr Mwakamo had asked about the government’s strategy to uplift the education sector and improve academic performance at the O’ level, noting that the Form IV national examination pass rate remained unsatisfactory.

He urged the government to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders in constructing hostels to improve the learning environment for students.

In response, Deputy Minister Katimba acknowledged the critical role of conducive school environment, including the availability of hostels, in enhancing academic performance.

She revealed that during the 2023/24–2024/25 period, the government allocated 70.33bn/- to construct 537 hostels in 270 secondary schools, aiming to upgrade them to offer Form Five and Six education.

“The government recognises the importance of schools having proper teaching and learning environments, including the availability of dormitories,” Ms Katimba emphasised.

However, she noted that the current approach involves the government partnering with various stakeholders, including parents, to improve school infrastructure nationwide.

“Our priority now is the construction of new day secondary schools to reduce student congestion, minimise long walking distances for children and expand opportunities for Form Five and Six enrolment,” she added.

Ms Katimba reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that education infrastructure development continues in line with efforts to enhance quality education, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The initiative forms part of broader reforms under President Samia’s administration, which aims to transform the education sector by investing heavily in facilities that directly impact student performance and wellbeing.
