Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Government has vowed to prioritise giving rights to women and girls with disabilities to enable them confront daily challenges and be productive in their communities.
Mr Jacob Mwinuka, the Director responsible for People with Disabilities in the Prime Minister’s Office made the statement during a recent platform for women and girls with disabilities held in Dar es Salaam organised by Action on Disability and Development (ADD International) “People with disabilities face a lot of challenges in their day to day life, but we now have evidence that women and girls with disabilities face more challenges compared to men”, he said.
He said that the government was aware of the challenges facing the group and has been working in collaboration with different stakeholders in finding the solutions. Apart from that, Mr Mwinuka noted that the government has finalized a guideline for key priority areas for people with disabilities, which he said, will be a breakthrough in reaching out to the groups.
The government has also prepared a guideline which will be used in exercises of identifying children with disabilities.
According to ADD International Country Director Rose Tesha the organisation had been implementing Disability Rights, Inclusion and Gender Equality (DRIGE) programme since July, 2019 which aims at building capacity to girls and women with disabilities and make them agents of positive change in their respective areas and the country as well.
She said: “this programme was a result of the research we did in Mkuranga and Kibaha in Coast region. It was through this research that we managed to come across the adversities that girls and women with disabilities are facing on daily basis.”
“We have implemented this programme in Iringa, Mtwara, Coast Region and Mtwara and it is coming to the end in November this year”, she said, adding that through the programme lives of disabled girls and women who were once living in difficult situations have been changed.”
