Prof Anangisye said this in an interview with ‘Daily News’ while speaking on the university’s contribution to the nation as it marks 60 years of independence.
The Vice Chancellor said the institution also prioritises gender equality in supporting students, noting that they consider them on equal ratio.
“The country is in great need of science students since the nation eyes to become industrialised,” said Prof Anangisye; adding that the aim of sponsoring students is to encourage them to study science courses as well as increase their numbers.
“In addition, we also provide funding for foreign students in master’s degree in Kiswahili and we have a number from Ghana, Rwanda and Uganda,” said Prof Anangisye.
He said the aim of providing the scholarship to the foreign students was to support the government’s efforts to market the language in African countries and the world at large.
Prof said the fund provided to the students from fellow African countries is also to implement the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Election Manifesto that encourages foreign students to learn Swahili language.
Elaborating, the don noted that the university was aware of its role in the community, and hence, must plough back as a way of supporting the government’s efforts in the education sector.
